Uses:Metformin is primarily indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, which can affect blood sugar levels. It is also a component of the extended-release formulation (Glucophage XR SR XL), used to treat high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetic patients.
Side Effects:Metformin is generally well tolerated, but may cause side effects, such as nausea, headache, diarrhea, constipation, and insomnia. Some individuals may experience bone pain or weakness, but these side effects are usually mild and temporary. These adverse effects are usually reversible upon discontinuation of the medication. Rarely, metformin may cause liver injury, which can be treated with liver enzyme-based medications. The dose of metformin should not be exceeded in individuals who have liver disease.
Contraindications:Metformin is contraindicated in individuals with a history of severe heart failure, severe liver disease, or if the patient is taking other medications containing glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications. Metformin should not be administered to individuals who are at risk of developing diabetes mellitus. These individuals should not use Metformin, and its safety and effectiveness should be established through a multidisciplinary approach.
